3/6/26 1PM to 3:30PM

Level of Difficulty: Adventurous Intermediate

Skills needed: Some familiarity with circular needles and double-point needles; at some point you've seen a knitting chart.

Skills taught: Chart-reading for cables and lattice (twisted stitches). Become more adept at circulars and Double Pointed Needles. Create the lattice design on Koolhaas without a cable needle.

Materials: The three patterns from brooklyntweed.com. Since we are exploring alternative yarn weights in this class, please plan to purchase yarn and needles for one pattern on the first day of class. If you have them, bring knitting markers, a cable needle shaped like a shepherd's crook.

Materials provided: Handout on twisted stitch technique.

THE HATS (available from brooklyntweed.com)
1. Koolhaas, a twisted-stitch lattice design, we'll learn a new method for working twisted stitches without a cable needle; the colorful substitution of sock yarn for a worsted-weight yarn, including adjusting the # of cast-on stitches, choosing a needle size, and whether or not (and how) to add a turn-back cuff.

2. Habitat, a cabled beanie with a snug fit. We'll discuss yarn alternatives and how to add a 24-stitch cable repeat to "relax" the snug fit in order to flatter (not to mention fit) a larger head. A turn-back cuff on this hat is another variation we'll experiment with.

3. First Brioche Hat incorporates brioche, an increasingly popular stitch and, thankfully, isn't as intimidating as it seems. We'll learn a rhythmic and sustainable 2-color brioche for this stylish hat and experiment with adding an afterthought brim/cuff.
